On April 16, 2014 Wilfred Rubens from EMMA-partner Open University in the Netherlands provided an expert session at the Next Learning Event 2014 in Den Bosch (The Netherlands). This contribution was about the role of Massive Open Online Courses for professional development of employees. He also introduced the EMMA-project.
One of his conclusions is that the high degree of fluidity of MOOCs increases the complexity to engage participants for learning. MOOCs may indeed contribute to professional development, but this requires the ability of self directedness.
